How to Transfer Your Data to TapExpense 2

There are two ways to transfer the existing data on your TapExpense to the newer version TapExpense 2.

1. Use the Built-in Backup/Restore

TapExpense has a built-in Backup/Restore mechanism since version 2.6. It emails you the whole database as an attachment. You can open the email on your iPhone's Mail app and then open the attachment to perform the restoration.

For example, on my iPhone, I now have two versions of the app: TapExpense and TapExpense 2.

Let's open the old version first. Tap the "Tools" tab, and scroll down to the bottom. Make sure we're in the old version (2.6.1 or earlier).

Then scroll to the top, tap Backup/Restore.

Mail the backup to yourself, then tap Send.

After that, go to the Mail app, and open the email you just received.

Tap the attachment. iPhone now asks me if I want to open the attachment with TapExpense 2. Now tap Open in "TapExpense 2".

If you are not seeing Open in "TapExpense 2" but instead Open in "TapExpense", you have to tap Open In…, then iPhone will ask you which app you want to use to open the attachment. Upon that, tap "TapExpense 2":

TapExpense 2 now launches and asks you if you want to restore the data.

Tap "Restore", and you're done!

Tap the "Tools" tab, scroll to the bottom, and confirm we're using the new version (2.6.2 or later). That's it!

2. Using iTunes File Sharing

TapExpense also allows iTunes to access its database file since version 2.6. We can use this feature to pull the database out, then plug it into the new version. Just open iTunes, find the "App" tab of your iPhone management page, then find at the bottom TapExpense. Drag the folder "Books" to your Desktop.

Then inside the Books folder, drag the file Default.db to the documents area of TapExpense 2:

The file will be placed at the same level as the Books folder. This is correct.

Now synchronize your iPhone (or iPod touch), so that the data is copied to your device. After that, open TapExpense 2, and the app will now ask you if you want to restore the data:

Tap "Restore", and you're done!

Tap the "Tools" tab, scroll to the bottom, and confirm we're using the new version (2.6.2 or later). That's it!
