TapExpense 2.2.1 has been available on the App Store since last Thursday (May 14). This version fixes a serious crashing bug in the Report tab when either of the two cases occurred:

If you chose to make a report over a date range within which no entry existed.

If you had previously deleted a category, but there were still entries under that now non-existing category.

None of the above cases occurred very often. We had received some user reports on the bug, but didn’t have enough information to pursue further (and many who reported have reset their database or reinstalled the app to keep it working). We were very fortunate, and I’m really grateful, that many users were willing to help us with the debugging—which involves trying a number of ad hoc distributed fixes and sending us crash logs. None of those was trivial matter, and we have learned a lot from the debugging process. I apologize for all the inconveniences caused by this oversight on our part.

Upgrade is highly recommended for everyone.

At the mean time, TapExpense Lite 2.2.1 is (still) being reviewed by Apple. If everything goes well it should be available on the App Store soon, too.

We have also posted this announcement on TapExpense’s own discussion forum. Traditional Chinese readers might be interested in the Mandarin Chinese version of the forum, too.

Thanks again to everyone who has helped us!

TapExpense 2.2 is available on the App Store now. The biggest new feature of 2.2 is the currency converter. You can enable it by tapping the Setting button in the Report tab, and it will look like this:

This is our new Report settings screen. There are two steps in enabling the currency coverter. First you choose the principal currency (the one into which you want the reported totals to be coverted), then you supply the exchange rates—or let TapExpense get the rates for you. So the first step:

Now you want to supply the rates, or simply tap the “Get Rates” button:

If you tap the Get Rates button, a prompt will show up first.

That’s it! TapExpense will get today’s exchange rates for you. When when you go back to your report, it will now look something like this:

One note is that, if you have added currencies not supplied by TapExpense’s factory defaults, you want to make sure that your currencies have the correct ISO symbols, which might not be intuitive sometimes (for example, JPY is for Japanese Yen). The currency converter uses Yahoo! Finance data, which in turns relies on ISO currency symbol names. And that’s why we were asking you for symbols in the first place! That’s something we had planned ahead.

TapExpense 2.2 has also fixed a bug in the pie chart drawing. A few of our users have experienced the “missing pie” bug caused by a faulty algorithm. Now the pies are all in place now.

And, if you are an iPhone developer and are already having iPhone OS [REDACTED] with you, TapExpense 2.2 also fixes the landscape bug when running under that version. It still has some probem under it (as is under any beta OS, obviously), and we’re working on that, too.

TapExpense is avaiable on the App Store for USD 4.99, and there is also a free Lite version you can try out.

Get your TapExpense paid version for free: If you’re reading this and you have an iTMS US Store account, and you have tried TapExpense Lite and found it cool, write something about TapExpense on your Twitter or blog, and forward us the link to contact {at} lithoglyph {com}, then we’ll mail you a free coupon code with which you can get the paid version for free. That’s USD 4.99 for under 160 words! This is a limited offer since we have only 50 coupon codes for each version, so get yours today!

Mondrianum 2.2 is just released. We are happy to report that this version finally solved a big headache for us: The previous versions didn’t work with Apple’s Pro Apps—Final Cut Pro, Motion, Aperture.

That had been a big headache for us, as we didn’t have those apps with us. In the end, with the help from a few friends working in the industry (and their generous time!), we finally found the bug and fixed it. Thanks for bearing with us!

As some of our users may already know, Mondrianum is featured on a February article on Lifehacker (this too), and we have witnessed a significant uppeak in download since that article is published. We are gladly surprised that our little utility is introduced to more people!

Modrianum 2.2 is recommended for all exisiting users. Apple Pro Apps users will find it a helpful tool—We’re sorry that it took us that long to have the bugs fixed!

Finally, Mondrianum is brought to you gratis (free). Meanwhile, if you like it and love to support its continued development, you can buy a copy of our iPhone app, TapExpense.

Thanks all!

TapExpense 2.1 has been available on the App Store since last Thursday! We were having a busy week so much so that we almost forget blogging this.

TapExpense 2.1 fixes a number of bugs, makes adjustments in the UI, and adds one frequently-requested feature—expense pie charts! Simply turn your iPhone or iPod Touch to the landscape orientation, and a series of pie charts show up using your current report settings.

You can swipe the screen to see different charts. Each chart represent a currency or currency-group, depending on what your report settings are.

Also, this version makes it possible to customize the fields you want to see when you add or edit an entry. Many of our users loved TapExpense 1 for the very reason that it was simple—it did not have 15 different fields you must enter to add an entry. On the other hand, TapExpense 2 adds two fields—group and vendor/income source—to suit business usage better (especially in the context of business travel, where later reimbursement depends on those information). To strike a balance between simplicity and feature richness, we have now added the customization in the Tools tab, so that you can reorder the fields the way you like them, or remove the fields you don’t actually use.

I want to mention one fixed bug and one adjustment. With TapExpense 2.0, when you added an entry to any other day than today, the new entry would be inserted with no apparent order. So, for example, if you already had a few entries under yesterday, then you added a new entry to that day, you would find that the new entry was inserted often in the middle of entries. I often forgot to log a few entries, then I woke up the next day and re-entered those entries, and found this truly annoying. This bug is now fixed.

The adjustment is done in the entry editor. With TapExpense 2.0, when you added or edited an entry, and scrolled down to add a note, you would probably find the distance between the Note cell and the tab bar was too close, and therefore you might often tap the tab bar instead of the Note field by mistake. TapExpense 2.1 adds some padding between the two, allowing some more maneuvering space for the finger. Now it looks better.

TapExpense 2.1 is available on the App Store now. is a free upgrade for all existing users and is USD 4.99 if you want to buy a copy. We also have detailed information and screenshots on our own website.

One again, thank you for the suggestions and the support!

We have submitted TapExpense 2.0.1 to Apple to review, and all goes well it should be available on the App Store soon. 2.0.1 fixes a bug in TapExpense 2.0 that caused trouble when you tried to add a new item (category, currency etc.) to a reordered list. Sometimes you wouldn’t be able to select the newly added item, and in some situations the new item’s name would overwrite an existing item’s. No entry data was lost but this caused annoyance.

We have distributed a few ad hoc copies to a number of our customers and we have confirmed that the bug is fixed in 2.0.1. We have also fixed a few typos and made some user interface fine-tuning along the way.

The upgrade is free for all existing users. The Lite version is also upgraded.
